Thomas Cook, American Express introduce travelers cheque card

Aug 12, 2005

Thomas Cook, which has been selling travellers cheques since 1874, has introduced "the travelers cheque card" in association with American Express.

One of the main advantages of the card is that it is usable in shops and restaurants like credit and debit cards. Designed to combine the ease of a payment card with the safety advantages of traveler's cheques, the card is a convenient way to carry money abroad.

Moreover, there are no hidden foreign exchange charges when the card is used overseas, as it is loaded is with local currency instead of the Pound Sterling. Like a traveler's cheque, the balance on the card can be returned usually within 24 hours if the card is lost or stolen.

The card which has been made available online at www.thomascook.com and in 77 stores across the UK from the beginning of this month can be used worldwide at ATMs, shops and restaurants. The card can be loaded with a minimum of £200 up to a maximum of £3,000, and is available in Euro, US Dollar and British Sterling with a small issuance fee. Customers also get access to customer support from American Express.

"The Travellers Cheque Card is the next generation for Travellers Cheques - easy and convenient, but just as safe. The best thing of all is that the funds on the Card aren't' linked to your bank account, so there's no risk to your personal funds if the Card is lost," said Melanie Whitehouse, Director, Foreign Exchange at Thomas Cook.
