Thomas Cook announces Popcorn Holidays for movie buffs

Feb 13, 2006

Hot films often have a major impact on sales to certain destinations - such as the rocketing of sales to Kefalonia on the release of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Sales to New Zealand have also soared since the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Malta holidays sold out fast when it became known that Troy was filmed there.

With this in mind, Thomas Cook is primed for a rush in demand for certain holiday destinations this year, led by the big movies coming out in the next few months. These trips, called “Popcorn Holidays’ by Thomas Cook, lets movie buffs visit the settings of their favorite new films.

Casanova – Venice

Due for release in February, Casanova stars Heath Ledger as the world’s greatest lover. Filmed on location in Venice, the film is sure to entice viewers to seek out their own romantic encounters in the famous gondolas and canals of one of world’s most unusual cities.

Sample price: Flexibletrips offers a three-night stay in Venice on March 6 from just £140 per person, departing from London Gatwick. For more information, visit your local Thomas Cook store, call 0870 160 9192 or visit www.flexibletrips.com

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 – Caribbean cruise

If the adventures of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, due out in July, have you clamoring to sail the high seas, you can visit the palm-clad islands of the Caribbean at your leisure with a cruise. Just hope that there aren’t any real pirates out there!

Sample price: A seven night cruise with Ocean Village around the Caribbean departing  November 14 2007 starts from £806 per person. To book, visit your local Thomas Cook store or call 08701 111111.

Miami Vice – Miami

Even the big shoulder pads and pastel suits of Miami Vice won’t put you off the amazing weather, palm-fringed beaches and huge opportunities for days out and shopping in Florida! The remake of the classic 80’s TV show is due out in July 2005 and is sure to inspire some visits to the Sunshine State.

Sample price: Seven nights in the three sun-plus Riu Florida hotel in South Miami Beach costs from £650 per person with Thomas Cook. To book, visit your local Thomas Cook store, call 08701 111111 or visit www.thomascook.com

The Da Vinci Code – Paris

Dan Brown’s novel caused a stir when it hit the bestsellers lists. Now the story is set to reach an even wider audience via the big screen this May. This film is sure to instill in moviegoers the need to see the real Mona Lisa in the Louvre museum in Paris.

Sample price: Three nights in Paris with Flexibletrips on June 2 starts from £186 per person, based on two sharing and flights from London Heathrow. To book, visit www.flexibletrips.com, any Thomas Cook store or call 0870 160 9192.

X-Men 3 – Canada

A constant favorite among the comics-to-movies genre, X-Men comes back for its third installment in May. The ‘School for Gifted Youngsters’ is set in New York State, but in fact all three movies were filmed in Canada. The School itself is a building in Oshawa, just outside Toronto. And beyond keeping your eyes peeled for mutants, Toronto offers a great holiday with something for everyone.
