BA’s summer 2006 schedule to include Albania & Bulgaria

Mar 24, 2006

British Airways is set to launch its first ever flights to Albania and Bulgaria's Black Sea coast this summer and increase long-haul capacity following the conversion of four short-haul Boeing 767s into long-haul aircraft.

The airline says six new destinations will be served from London Gatwick airport with flights starting from March 26, 2006. They are:

  • Tirana, Albania's capital, with three flights each week
  • Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, with five flights each week
  • Varna, on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, with two flights each week rising to four flights each

Week from June 2006

  • Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, with three flights each week rising to four flights each

Week from June 2006

  • Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, with three flights each week
  • Athens with four flights each week

In addition, BA says services to the Latvian capital Riga will move from London Heathrow to London Gatwick.

The airline currently is reconfiguring four short-haul Boeing 767s into long-haul aircraft. Together with improvements in aircraft utilization, this will enable the number of long-haul flights to be increased by seven per cent to more than 1200 each week compared to last summer.

According to BA, flights from London Heathrow to Delhi will double to two flights each day and, from June 2006, there will be increased flights to a number of north American destinations. Services to both Montreal and Seattle will increase from seven to 10 each week, Toronto flights will increase from 17 to 21 each week, and services to Vancouver will rise from 10 to 13 each week. Finally, flights from London Gatwick to Bermuda will increase from five each week to a daily service from March 26, 2006.
