The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) has applauded the Canadian government's decision to sign the Open Skies agreement with the UK.
According to ACTA, the agreement comes at an auspicious time, with up to 2 million travelers transiting or visiting both countries by air every year, and with the UK currently ranked as the second favorite travel destination for Canadians.
With new pricing provisions, the Open Skies agreement is expected to allow Canadian airlines to offer competitively-priced passenger and cargo flights to and from Britain, and on to Europe, the Middle East and other countries. Similarly, British airlines will have similar rights when flying to Canada and onwards to other destinations.
"This agreement is good news to consumers and business travelers alike, who will benefit from having more destinations to more cities or city pairs which are not presently serviced," says Christiane Théberge, Vice-President, Public Affairs.
"More competition will translate in better prices, which will hence benefit the retail travel sector and the economy in general, as ACTA previously commented with regards to the Air Transport Agreement in June 2005," she added.
